Frane’s 2023 Reserve Meritage boasts all 5 Bordeaux varietals: 26% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Petit Verdot, and 16% Malbec. Each vineyard block contributes its unique character: the Merlot from Foppiano’s Dry Creek Valley vineyard adds plummy plushness; next up is the other 4 bordeaux varietals, all hailing from Petroni’s famed steep hillside. The Cab Franc brings good herbaceousness and minerality, while the Petroni Cabernet Sauvignon establishes a firm, yet complex structure. Meanwhile, the Petit Verdot enlivens and extends the finish with a core of black olive and leather, making way for the Malbec to offer up an aftertaste of good earth and fruitcake. This classic Meritage pairs well with rich meat dishes like Osso Buco, Filet Mignon, and Beef Bourguignon.
