Description
Pinot Gris is a white grape variety of the species Vitis vinifera. Thought to be a mutant clone of the pinot noir variety, it normally has a grayish-blue fruit, hence “gris,” which is French for gray. Tropical aromas of kiwi, cantaloupe, and honeydew melon waft up on the first sip leading to a fresh, minerally texture, offering crisp flavors of celery, grapefruit and lime on the palate. It pairs especially well with seared scallops in a Pinot Gris butter sauce, and equally well with prawns, oysters, grilled lobster, or cracked crab. And let’s not forget these pairing possibiities: a bagel with cream cheese and lox, orange chicken, linguini with clams, sauerbraten, hot & sour soup, dim sum, pulled pork sliders, and veggie burgers. On the charcuterie side, try goat cheese, Brie, and Caerphilly. This refreshingly dry style of Pinot Gris is a great sipper on its own but is also a safe pairing with just about anything you pull out of the fridge, including leftovers.
